Background:
I have an old computer running linux. Linux is a variant of
the Unix OS family. It is among the SYSTEM V variants developed
at AT&T's Bell Labs in 1969, the others being the BSD variants
which derived from the U of C @ Berkeley. Berkeley got the source
code from Bell Labs and made some changes to its structure.
I was initially challenged by these Unix type OSs when I (as
a student) began logging on to the University of Alabama's
SUN Microsystems server (bama.ua.edu) running SunOS and later
Solaris. All students requesting an account on this machine
are given user accounts.
Once I became comfortable with user commands and processes,
I became more interested in administration. I couldn't afford
a SUN computer like the Universities use but I could use linux
which runs on PC computers. I then became proficient with linux
as well. I tried the BSD variant known as FreeBSD. I liked it
but didn't want to learn how to use their advanced ipfilter
so I went back to linux (ipchains).
After getting a broadband (high-speed) connection, I wanted
to put my linux box on the internet just as bama.ua.edu and
have it serve email, web pages, etc... Most web pages and
internet services you access from your ISPs are coming from
Unix boxes, not Microsoft stuff...
At this time, I have to spend all my research time studying
for Windows 2000's MCSE. I never check for newly discovered
security holes in linux distributions. My computer was
compromised by someone exploiting a 'known' problem with my
version.
