NE2000 VM Emulator Configuration on Mobile 2005 Emulator START, SETTINGS, CONNECTIONS, NETWORK CARDS My network card connects to: "THE INTERNET" NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver: configure settings as needed. Configuring the network emualtor driver for "THE INTERNET" will simplify connectivity for LAN and Internet configurations. If you configured it for WORK, then you have to ALSO continue on with configuring how the device will get to the internet, etc... There is no firewalling issues, etc. that result from simply selecting INTERNET. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Skins Using Blank Skin The blank skin will enlarge your display to 460 x 640, which will make the default background annoying. To remove / change the background, setup a shared folder, move one of the blank skins into the shared storage, convert to PNG or something more compressible than the BMP format, go to Programs, File Explorer, Storage Card, open the image file, select Menu, set as today background. Leave the transparency at 65%, this will give you a boring grey tone background which should be less distracting for development. Testing at 0% transparency gives a nice black background. When you specify a VM title on the command line, it will be shown in the Device Emulator Manager while the title for the "skin" will be shown on the emulator title bar. After the VM is fully started, the name will then go back to the GUID /vmid for reasons unknown to me at this time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This emulator is NOT compatible with the Windows Mobile 2003 images that you may find on Microsoft's web site. It only works for Windows Mobile 5.0 images. If you would like an emulator for the Palm Treo 700w, then please see this blog entry: http://www.sembee.co.uk/archive/2006/05/01/16.aspx When you have more than one NIC, the emulator will automatically choose to bind to a NIC who has a network connection, to ensure the data connectivity. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can save the state of the Device Emulator at any time by clicking Save State on the emulator File menu. You are also prompted to save state whenever you close the emulator. The saved-state file is located by default under \Documents and Settings\ <username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Device Emulator. Global saved-state files are located under \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ Microsoft\Device Emulator. A file with the extension .dess (Device Emulator Saved State) contains all RAM, ROM, and settings information from the Device Emulator. The .dess file is therefore the only file necessary to restore a saved state. The .dess extension is registered at setup time, so that double-clicking a .dess file launches the Device Emulator with the state saved in that file. Saved-state images are created by default on a per/user basis. If you want to create a global saved-state image, launch the emulator from the command line using the /g switch. This was not the case on my installation, by default the .dess files were saved in Program Files (which is essentially an admin only config): C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 MSFP Emulator Images -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o VPC Network Adapter Download http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=DC8332D6-565F-4A57-BE8C-1D4718D3AF65 o Device Emulator 1.0 with MSFP download http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c62d54a5-183a-4a1e-a7e2-cc500ed1f19a o Microsoft ActiveSync http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx
