Windows DUN Error Messages:
Windows DUN Problems:
629 - The Port Was Disconnected by the Remote Machine.
Begin by verifying the access # the customer is dialing. If no reported problems, check the connectoid, network components, and gather the customer’s modem information. Make a new connectoid, reinstall TCP/IP, then focus on the modem and try other access #s.
630 - The Port Was Disconnected due to Hardware Failure.
Begin by verifying the access # the customer is dialing. If no reported problems, check the modem. If it looks ok, make a new connectoid, try another access #, if the issue continues, refer to the modem oem for further support.
645 - Internal Authentication Error.
Verify the connectoid settings, especially that the "Require Encrypted Password" is NOT checked. If ok, make a new connectoid and have the customer try again.
650 - The Remote Access Server (RAS) is not responding.
Check the # the customer is dialing for known issues. Check connectoid and verify correct protocols installed in the network screen, and that the TCP/IP properties are correct. Get the modem information (type, speed, mfgr) If all is ok, begin reinstalling all network components and making a new connectoid. Have the customer try again.
651 - Your modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.
ISDN TA - Disconnect POTS phone (RJ11). Unplug modem from power source for reset.
676 - The line is busy.
Standard procedures, check the # dialing and the dialing properties to insure the customer isn’t dialing the wrong #. If 2 lines, try dialing # manually. Check to see if the # is on the System Status as having problems. Verify that the customer heard a busy signal instead of a handshake or operator voice.
678 - There is no answer.
Standard procedures, check the # dialing and the dialing properties to insure the customer isn’t dialing the wrong #. If 2 lines, try dialing # manually. Check to see if the # is on the System Status as having problems. Verify that the customer heard a busy signal instead of a handshake or operator voice.
680 - No Dial Tone.
Standard procedures, check the connections between the modem and the wall jack, that there are no other devices between the two (like printers/fax machines), that the customer doesn’t have voice mail to check, and that when the dialing attempts have occurred that the line was free.
691 - Invalid Username/Password.
Standard procedures for password errors. Check the connectoid to verify has GTE/ in front of username, password is typed in correctly. Check for problems with the access # using, verify proper network components installed. Make sure domain name not filled in in IE 4 settings. Check account status and previous tickets. Telnet into the mail server to test the password. If all ok, begin by making a new connectoid, reinstall tcp/ip, try other access #s. Other possible options, reinstall all of DUN, delete the *.pwl then log into windows again, last resort is password reset procedures.
718 - PPP Timeout.
Check the # the customer is dialing for problems. Verify that there is no domain name in use either in the IE4 settings or in the TCP/IP settings. Verify that the correct network protocols are installed. Make a new connection and try alternate access #s.
720 - No PPP Control Protocols Configured.
Check the Connectoid settings, specifically the server types, make sure it’s set to PPP, that Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP are the only boxes checked, and that the DNS #s are in the TCP/IP Properties. Also check that only the 3 correct network components are installed (Client for MS Networks or MS Family Login, Dialup Adapter, TCP/IP.) and are properly configured. If ok, make a new connectoid and reinstall the network components.
745 - Dial Up Networking is not properly installed, please reinstall.
Do as it says, verify cabs/cd-rom, uninstall and reinstall DUN, make a new connectoid, if not fix, send to PC OEM or Microsoft.
You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. Double-click the connection to try again.
- Check the userid/password. Is the CaSe correct?
- Check DUN SETTINGS/ENABLE TTY to see where the connection attempt fails.
- If the computer does not dial out, try setting the modem to a standard software (init string) to initialize.
- If the modem is initializing, check for line noise: login at TTY window and checking for 'noise' on the terminal screen.
- Check the MODEM PROPERTIES, NETWORK PROPERTIES, TCP/IP PROPERTIES and for an external modem, you need to know the UART chip from the DIAGNOSTICS tab window (GET MORE INFO).
- Check for multiple winsocks, wsock32, and url.dll.
- Set the modem software to a standard setting to get it to initialize.
- Delete and reinstall TCP/IP and DUN.
Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the Server Type settings. Check your network configuration in the Control Panel then try the connection again.
- Check DUN settings.
- Enable TTY Window.
- Check baud rate. Go to "Control Panel", select "Modems", "Modem Properties", "Properties".
- Check for line noise.
- Check "Protocols" in Control Panel/Network, is there two "TCP/IP->Dialup Adapter" protocols.
- Reinstall TCP/IP and DUN.
- Check for another application trying to access the same COM port.
- Change the modem software to a standard windows modem.
- Check for Winsock.dll (dated 7-11-95), Wsock32.dll, and url.dll.
- Check for VFC in "Extra Settings", if there, change to S32=4. Control Panel/Modems/Properties/Connection/Advanced.
- Check "Log On To Network" DUN/My Connection/Server Types.
- In "Network", uninstall any components not needed. Dial-Up Adapter, TCP/IP, Client For Microsoft Networks are desired.
- Lower modem speed.
- In Dun properties, General/Server Types/ then uncheck "Enable Software Compression".
- "ctrl-alt-delete" and close "Rnaapp".
- If it's a USR modem, put "S12=0" in "Extra Settings". If not, put &F there.
- Delete anything that pertains to the DUN connection. Delete the shortcut on the desktop. In Dial Up Networking, delete the connection and make a new one. Delete all PWL files.
- Try running the Scandisk and Defragment applications.
Unable To Open Communications Port
- "ctrl-alt-delete" - check for anything that might use a COM port.
- Can the computer can communicate with the modem? Control Panel/Modems/More Info/Diagnostics/.
- C:\ECHO ATDT > COM1. (ATDT = Attention Dial-Tone, ATH = Attention Hangup, ATZ = Attention Reset)
- Look in the "win.ini" file for load= and run=. Check AUTOEXEC.BAT.
- Check the DUN/My Connection settings.
The modem is being used by another Dial-Up Networking connection or another program. Disconnect the other connection or close the program, and then try again.
Sometimes another program, such as a fax or voice mail program, may be accessing the same comport that the modem uses. Here's how to check. Hold down "ctrl-alt-delete" at the same time for a second and a screen like below should come up. If a program you suspect may be accessing the same com port as the modem is running, disable it by highlighting it, then click "End Task". If no programs are running, click "Cancel" and no harm done. (Don't press "ctrl-alt-delete" twice or computer will restart.)
Windows 9x Dialup Networking will not save password?
Even with the 'Client for Microsoft Networks' installed, you may be unable
to save the connection password due to other variables. These variables are
located in the Windows Control Panel.
If the reinstallation of the 'Client for Microsoft Networks' does not allow
you to save your connection password, try the following:
- Delete all PWL files in the \Windows directory.
- [Control Panel/Users] - Select single user or delete all users (Do not restart computer).
- [Control Panel/Passwords] - "All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings" (Do not restart computer).
- [Control Panel/Network] - Reinstall the 'Client for Microsoft Networks'
- [Control Panel/Network] - Primary Network Logon: Microsoft Family Logon
- Select YES, you would like to restart the computer.
- Type in a username when Windows prompts at startup. This is invoked b/c of the missing PWL.
- Do not type in a password for windows, confirm the 'null' password.
- Connect to internet and save password!
